Frequently Asked Questions

What are the characteristics of a good tree service company?

When you need tree service, reliability, quality and experience make a company worth hiring. Also, make sure a company holds professional certifications and licenses, with plenty of online reviews so you can see for yourself how the community views the company’s services. Finally, it’s essential for a tree service company to take safety seriously. They should have up-to-date insurance, and their employees should have extensive training in all safety procedures. When you pose questions like these to the tree service company, a reliable one will be straightforward and understanding with the answers.

What is a certified arborist?

A certified arborist is an expert in the field, with a significant knowledge base regarding plant and tree care, pesticides, planting safety, and relevant technical issues. More importantly, to become certified, he or she must pass lengthy and difficult exams illustrating a broad foundation of tree-related knowledge.

Is it necessary to prune trees?

Trees need pruning for a number of important reasons, including aesthetics, safety, and tree health. First, broken or damaged limbs can be dangerous, even in calm weather. Not only can they fall without warning and damage landscaping or structures, but they can seriously injure anyone in the way of their fall. Not to mention, some branches grow too large or near other trees, and can pose a threat to your roof and chimney. And for a tree that looks tall and majestic, pruning allows it to grow healthier, so you can maintain a clear view of the horizon and your property.

When is the best time of year to prune a tree?

Most trees can be pruned any time of year, but many prefer to have them serviced just before bud break. Some trees should not be cut, like large evergreens, though small ones like hedge shrubs or Holly can be shaped using shears. Deciduous trees can handle pruning in any season.

What happens if my property gets damaged during tree service?

Although at Gordon Pro Tree Service, we make safety and care a top priority, accidents do happen. An experienced crew should apply protective coverings to sensitive areas when necessary, and cleanup should be thorough. Our goal is to leave no visible imprint beyond the service, but should the worst occur, our liability insurance protects your property from risk.

Why should a tree company carry insurance?

By design, tree work is dangerous, and a company should protect itself, its employees and its clients. Gordon Pro Tree Service maintains complete coverage, and we can provide you with proof of insurance at your request.

What are the benefits of having trees on my property?

Trees bring a number of positive attributes to your property. They can offer shade in balmy weather, bright colors in fall and spring, and ambiance year-round. Few experiences can compare to that of planting a tree and watching it grow. As years go by, it becomes part of your home and life, holding its own set of valuable memories.

What are the best trees for shade/flowers/easy maintenance/color?

With so many wonderful options to choose from, you can create the perfect outdoor escape depending on your lifestyle and needs. While many homeowners prefer bold, exotic varieties, others opt for evergreens (that stay fresh all year), large varieties (for shade and comfort), and dwarf trees that decorate unique spaces. The choices are endless.

In Georgia, Oak trees provide permanence and stability, Tulip Poplars flower beautifully, Ginkos establish easily and stay sturdy through harsh conditions, and Princeton Elms leave your lawn looking classic and stately, especially in fall when their leaves turn a stunning gold. If you want flowering trees to complement the landscape, try a Saucer Magnolia, Sweetbay, White Dogwood, Redbud, or Crepe Myrtle.

What do I do about a sick tree?

If you suspect a tree of being sick or near death, the best option is to call a professional for evaluation. While the tree might need special treatment, it could also require removal. And you don’t want to neglect a sick tree. If it falls unexpectedly, it could damage property and endanger lives. Be sure to call Gordon Pro Tree Service for help identifying and removing an endangered tree or shrub.

Do you haul wood and debris?

Yes, in most cases, we haul wood and debris off the property. When you receive an estimate, cleanup and removal should be part of the services provided. In some instances, homeowners prefer to keep some scrap wood, and that can be arranged with advance notice.

What’s the difference between stump removal and stump grinding?

For complete stump removal, the stump–including root ball–is taken out of the ground. This process can be difficult, since the root ball grows along with the tree and can become considerably sized. When the stump and ball are removed, there’s a large hole in the ground where the tree once stood.

With stump grinding, the crew removes the tree at ground level and grinds the stump (with a stump grinder) into small bits. You can use these pieces as mulch or ask that they get cleaned up and hauled away. After the process concludes, the area where the tree once stood gets covered by dirt, and over time, the stump and roots will decay.
